One afternoon in the Ceschia distillery at Nimis with the great-grandson of the founder Giacomo Ceschia, through an interesting guided tour and final tasting of grappa.

THE STORY OF THE DISTILLERY GIACOMO CESCHIA

The history of the Ceschia distillery began in 1886 in Nimis, Friuli Venezia Giulia with the innovative invention of the founder, Giacomo Ceschia, of an ambulant still with whom he went into the houses of winemakers to distill the pomace used above all to make the Ramandolo wine.

The Ceschia distillery is the oldest in Friuli and has a history deeply intertwined with the territory in which it is located.

It was precisely the type of pomace used to make the product so unique and inimitable, in fact the historic grappa, the red label, is still produced with the same methods, using 80% of Verduzzo pomace from the locality of Ramandolo.

The grappa Ceschia is not only the story of a grappa but of an entire family that, through 4 generations, has dedicated body and soul to this product making it known to the public.

GUIDED TOUR AND TASTING

The other week I was invited to take a guided tour inside the Ceschia distillery because the harvest is over and it is time to start the distillation.

We were accompanied by the great-grandson of the founder who, with a strict Friulian confidence, explained to us how the grappa, the products, and the history of this company from beginning to end.

Back at the shop we did a tasting accompanied by sweets typical of the area like the “strucco” for the white Grappa Nemas, a biscuit Furlongs with the Grappa Ramandolo Gentile and dark chocolate of Adelia di Fant of San Daniele for the Grappa Nemas Barrique.

I had a lot of fun discovering this world that was totally unknown to me and above all, I learned of a century long history so close to the place where I live now. A history of success and quality that, thanks to the Molinari company that bought it 6 years ago, will continue to exist  and distribute them throughout Italy.

A pleasant discovery that I invite everyone to do, in fact, the guided tours are open to all by contacting directly the distillery LINK HERE or through the FVG  tourism page LINK HERE.

PRODUCTS

The Classic Grappa of Ramandolo is just one of the products that can be found in the Ceschia distillery shop in Nimis, in the classic stuffed bottle you can also find the Ramandolo Gentile Grappa at 43 degrees and the very good Black Label Grappa distilled in 1977 at 60 degrees. Then you can find the grappa of the Grappa Nemas line (ancient Celtic name of Nimis) that is also produced with the pomace of all the other vines of the area (Refosco, Cabernet, Tocai, …).

There is also the barricade version that is made to refine in oak barrels and is excellent with dark chocolate. In addition there are also grape, strawberry and cherry spirits perfect for after-dinner with friends.

The Ceschia distillery is part of the Friuli Venezia Giulia wine and flavors road (Strada del vino e dei sapori) puts the tourist in the know of companies, events, products of our territory and allows to organize meetings and visits.
