Sunbathing, hiking, lunch in the shelters, kayaking, boat rides, bike paths that line the lake, many baths in the lake and more.
Here’s what to do during a holiday on Lake Millstatt am See in Austria.
Simon had heard about Lake Millstatt just 40 minutes from Villach long ago. At the end of May there was the opportunity to do 2 days out of town and we took the chance to visit this area of Austria and to do some good hiking in the mountains.
We booked the 4-star hotel Am See – Die Forelle which is right in the middle of the lake in the town of Millstatt. The Hotel is a mix. The dining rooms are in classic style while the terrace overlooking the lake and the dehor are modern and welcoming. Many of the rooms, the swimming pool, the garden and the breakfast room are overlooking the calm waters of the Millstatter see.
We opted for the room on the lower floor with the largest terrace overlooking the lake, in this way our dog Giorgino had more space to roam especially while we were having breakfast (because the dogs are not allowed in the breakfast room – Sadness).
Apart from this the only problems (but classics throughout Austria) is that the restaurant closed at 20.00 – no way: O – and that there was never a barman at the bar and to drink a beer you had to look for the staff.
But otherwise everything is super.
Incredible breakfast of sweet and savory that you can also eat outdoors, pretty SPA and also the swimming pool not bad. In addition, the hotel is located right in the center and to go out for dinner just take a walk.

Lake Millstatt is considered the jewel of Carinthia and is the second largest lake after the Worthersee. It is surrounded by dozens of peaks that exceed 2000 meters and in addition to dozens of walking and cycling routes you can also rent motorboats or rowing boats to sail solo, buy a ticket for the ferry and run it for two hours in relax or decide to do sports and rent a canoe, kayak, windsurf and have fun as long as you want.
We arrived during a storm, but the nice thing about having a dog is that you are obliged to go out even if you do not want to. This allowed us to discover a nice restaurant right in the center.
It is the “Lindenhof Millstatt an see” a classic Wirtshaus and Biergarten or as we will call it “tavern and beer garden” where you can drink an excellent cold-ground beer and eat traditional Austrian dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, spatzle or Knodel. A delightful place with a classic style but revisited in a modern way that I strongly recommend.
Due to the fact that it closes everything very early one day we arrived “long” and in Millstatt we were not able to dine, so we moved to Spittal where the “Cantina Mexicana” prepare us some delicious Mex dishes until late hours and good drinks!
On the Millstatt tourism website there are various walks and ideas for your stay.
We decided to do the “walk the love”, not because we are so romantic but simply because it was on the site and we did not have the map. The point is that we never got there.
The walk of love HERE THE LINK leaves from the shelter AlexandeHutte at 1786 meters from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake. You can get up there by taking taxis or probably in season (when we went it was still all closed) even with your car.
In any case we started from below, far below, and to get to the shelter we put at least 2 and a half hours. We were leaving late, because the weather was uncertain in the morning, it was too late to make the path of love and we just went up to the shelter, ate our supplies and went down.
The walk was beautiful anyway, we crossed woods, meadows and green hills. We had fun spying on the hunters’ treehouses and greeting the cows along the way. A wonderful day that ended with a great Austrian beer immediately after our return.
SPA & RELAX
On the lake there are also the thermal baths with an incredible outdoor pool where you can enjoy the sunset immersed in the silence of the evening.
If you prefer an aperitif there are plenty of bars, restaurants and shelters from which you can enjoy the spectacle of the sun going down over the water. Many hotels have swimming pools, saunas and steam baths perfect to recover after a walk.
I would call Lake Millstatt perfect for those who love active holidays, nature but also great food and relaxation. A weekend here flies and I assure you that if you’ve never been there is a lovely place to spend two days with family or couple.
