Are you planning a trip to Barcelona and would like to make a day trip but do not know where to go?
Come with me to discover Sant Cugat de Valles, a beautiful Catalan town 30 minutes from Barcelona. Very interesting for architecture, a beautiful center in the old city and an intense nightlife.
Sant Cugat de Valles is a charming Catalan town that is only a few kilometers from Barcelona, in 20 minutes by taking the blue line of the metro, from Plaza Catalunya you can get directly in its city center.
Founded as a dormitory town, in a few decades thanks to its enviable location has become the perfect place to live. Close to Barcelona but also to the giant Collserola park, Sant Cugat has always been home for the rich families of Barcelona as you can see from full of boutiques and stylish shops. The city is also home to many students and sports people. Also thanks to this mix the city has a lively nightlife that ranges from classical Tapas Bar to more modern places.
I started my exploration course with BREAKFAST!
The most ‘popular Sant Cugat pastry is called “El cafe de la Mirta”.
This shabby-style bar is located on Central Avenue and only serves cakes are hand-made by the owner.
You can find the classic Spanish dishes the “alfajores” but also multilayer cakes and cupcake. I do recommend the Maxima cake (it is the one pictured below), I had mistakenly thought the name was due to the characteristics of the pie that is huge, high, triple chocolate and truly the maximum taste … but Maximo is the name of the son , that’s all!
After breakfast follow the boulevard to the main square that is Placa d’Octavia where you will find the beautiful Benedictine Monastery of the sixteenth century.
Here you can visit one of the most important monasteries in Europe with its 70 decorated capitals but also a twelfth-century church, a museum with works ranging from Gothic to Roman and even the very useful TOURIST OFFICE where you can ask for a free map of the city.
With the map you can make the very interesting tour around houses and hermitages beautiful from the architectural point of view.
1. Casa Armet
Here you can find the first example of modernism in Sant Cugat. Casa Armet is a beautiful villa with garden that recalls the works of Gaudì in all and for all.
The beautiful facade as a mix of ceramics, wood and bricks that create beautiful lines. Making the rounds of the house do not miss the tower and the windmill covered with ceramics.
2. Casa Mojica
3. Cara Mir
4. Casa Monaco
Floral and terracotta columns decorations for this modernist building completely restored in 1910.
It owes its name to the “Club Monaco” a local famous Pool bar born in the 50s. Now this building houses an art school.
5. Avignuda de Gracia 27
Even modern architecture finds space in Sant Cugat. Along the same street as the other buildings dates a look at this brand new apartment condo at number 27. Is the winner of numerous awards.
6. La casa de Concha
In Carrer de Sant Antoni 21 do not miss the beautiful house of shells dated 1971.
In addition to these beautiful residences Sant Cugat has an interesting cultural center and a city museum.
The nightlife in the evening is no less. It starts at 7 with aperitifs in Placa d’Octavia and following the main street you can have good choice of place to go.
Never finish a day trip from Barcelona without a bit of party.
If you look for a place where end the evening the “caffe ‘Belgrado” is the perfect place. Restaurant as well as concerts and disco hall the “Belgrado” is perfect for an aperitif, dinner and after dinner. The food is great, the bands playing are always very entertaining and the room where they dance is very wide. Place super fun!
Hotel Sant Cugat – Cesar Martinell 2 – If you decide to stop for a night, right behind the central square of the city I recommend this hotel. Central, clean, great views from upper floors and good breakfast too.
Labarra Cugat – Plaza Quatre Cantons 3 – Super recommended as a tapas bar as a restaurant. Gazpacho and fish excellent, also the delicious drink.
Somewhere – C. Sant Antoni, 56, – Very nice modern bar with refined and studied dishes. Perfect for brunch and if you love dishes from around the world they served it in a very chic way.
El Meson – Placa Octavia, 6 – Classic tapas bar, great food in a very beautiful location.
El cafe de Mirta – Carrer Villa Number 8 – The best for breakfast and snack time.
Cafe de Belgrado – Rius i Tablet 120 – Dinner, club and drinks. Much fun!
TOURISM OFFICE – SANT CUGAT DES VALLES – Placa d’Octavia
